Hair Inspiration Photos: What to Bring to a Pittsburgh Salon

Craft Collective Salon Group · Updated

A useful inspiration photo starts a conversation. It does not need to show someone who looks exactly like you, but it should help explain what you want to change. For a Pittsburgh salon visit, bring a small selection of images and identify the details you like in each.

Ten unrelated looks can make the goal harder to understand. Choose a few that share the same idea, then include a current photograph of your hair. This lets the stylist compare the desired result with your actual starting point.

For color, identify the placement and contrast

Point out whether you like the tone, face-framing brightness, root transition or depth underneath. A photograph labeled balayage might show several techniques working together. Describe what you see rather than relying only on its caption.

Include a photograph showing the roots and one showing the ends. Lighting, filters and styling can change the appearance of color, so use the images as references for discussion rather than exact shade promises. The stylist can explain how the idea could translate to your hair.

For a haircut, show shape as well as length

Discuss where you want the perimeter to sit, how you feel about layers and whether you want a fringe. A front view alone may not show the back shape or how much weight has been removed. Bring another angle if that detail matters to you.

If you have waves or curls, include images with a similar natural pattern where possible. Explain whether you usually air-dry or style smooth. The same cut can look different when worn in its natural texture.

Bring one example of what you do not want

An unwanted result can be useful if you explain it respectfully and specifically: too much contrast at the root, ends that look too thin, a fringe that takes too much daily styling, or a shape that feels too short around the face. Avoid asking the stylist to infer the issue from the image.

Match the goal to your routine

End with a shared plan

Before the service begins, repeat the agreed length, color direction, inclusions and estimate. Ask what will be achieved at this visit and whether the goal needs later appointments. If you have a fixed departure time, mention it while the plan is being formed.

Use the first-visit checklist, browse Craft Collective’s own gallery and explore the team. Confirm your North Hills or Canonsburg location on the appointment confirmation.
